Geekend 2009
It was the first weekend of November and Savannah, Georgia was invaded by the Geeks. Yes, Geeks. Geekend, which is an annual gathering of designers, techies, and social media professionals, was held in one of Georgia's oldest cities November 6th-8th. Fortunately, h2b's social media consultant James Kelley was in attendance for this years geek gathering.
“Its a great way to get out and meet everyone in the different industries by putting together the best event to make the industry more formal," said James.
Friday kicked off the start of Geekend with keynote speaker Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design Company. Known mostly for his snowboard designs, Aaron has also done graphics for Nike and even the United States Government. Aaron spoke mostly on how his passion and love for graphic design lead him to where he is today. After the keynote speech by Aaron Draplin, MK2 and Hula Hoop provided the large crowd with lively entertainment that kicked-off the beginning of the weekend.
Saturday, James attended insightful presentations by Sloane Kelley and Kevin Lawver of Music Intelligence Solutions. Sloane Kelley's presentation, "Digital Trend for Digital Natives," provided a look into the direction social media is headed. Lawver's presentation, "Building Whuffie: Reputation and Future of the Social Web," discussed the importance of actively contributing to a community when using social media. Lawver also suggested that anyone interested in participating in social media networks read the book "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom" by Cory Doctorow.
h2b had a blast at Geekend! Thanks to all the parties that came together to make this event successful. We look forward to Geekend 2010!
